The Ophthalmic Division provides secondary and tertiary care to residents of Greater Manchester and beyond. The Division provides an extensive range of services and facilities for both adults and children. These include the Emergency Eye Department, Ophthalmic Imaging, Ultrasound Unit, Electrodiagnosis, Laser Unit, Optometry, Orthoptics, the state-of-the-art Manchester Eye Bank and Ocular Prosthetics.
The new Eye Hospital opened as part of the New Hospitals Development in August 2009. On the ground floor of the new two-storey hospital the main reception area incorporates everything needed for outpatient visits including 24 examination rooms, five laser treatment rooms and two ultrasound rooms. On the first floor, the ophthalmic ward is made up of nine single rooms, an isolation room and a four bedded area together with consulting and treatment rooms.
The day case unit includes six examination rooms, three interview rooms and a number of specialist treatment rooms. Also included within day case is the macular treatment centre, which has two purpose built injection rooms, clinical imaging facilities, and seven examination rooms.
It provides a new model of care by replacing fragmented facilities across three buildings and producing a better patient experience by separating planned and emergency treatment.
Manchester Royal Eye Hospital was 200 years old in 2014 and we celebrated this landmark achievement throughout the year with a number of events. Find out more about our bicentenary celebrations
